Yes, that is exactly what measuring is for. An RCD that trips almost always means current is leaking to earth somewhere. We use a clamp meter to measure the leakage current per circuit while everything is live, so it is immediately clear which circuit is the culprit. We then measure the insulation resistance of that circuit with an insulation tester at 500 volts DC, and test the RCD itself for sensitivity and trip time — because sometimes the fault is not in your installation but in a worn-out RCD. In practice we often trace it to a water heater, an older washing machine, outdoor lighting or a damp circuit. We keep searching until we find it, and we always tell you what it is before replacing anything.

This happens more often than you'd think, especially in older homes: there is no earthing, it has corroded through, or the resistance has become too high. Without proper earthing your installation will not pass inspection, and more importantly, your RCD cannot do its job. We put that right — installing an earth loop or earth rod, renewing the earthing terminal, and running the equipotential bonding to your pipework and bathroom. Afterwards we measure the earthing resistance: for a home it must stay under 30 ohms. Above that, the earthing is insufficient. In certain cases up to 100 ohms is allowed with extra protection via a 30 mA RCD, but we'd rather fix the earthing itself properly — that remains the safest solution. An inspection is mandatory for a new installation, a full renovation, or the sale of a home.
